Iron fence theft irks publican

By

BARRY CLARKE

A Christchurch publican is baffled as to why someone would steal a 20m-long, 2m-high wrought-iron fence from his hotel.

Mr lan Robertson, part-owner of the Woolston Tavern, arrived at work last Sunday morning to find the fence missing. “I knew something was wrong. At first I couldn’t work it out. Then I realised the fence wasn’t there,” he said yesterday. “It’s very disappointing. We took the hotel over only a week ago.”

The fence was taken after 1.30 a.m., in freezing conditions. A gas torch would have been needed to dismantle it.

“I’d like to think the burglars would bring it back, but I think it’s highly unlikely.” “The fence was there for a proposed beer garden.” The police are investigating the possibility that the theft might have been connected with the change of ownership of the hotel. .
