MESSAGE TO PARENTS NO. 16 Tomorrow’s Schools emphasises that principals .A* ' are professional leaders of schools and are -1 responsible for overall school management. As such they must be clearly accountable for their IS performance and actions. We have suggested that this be achieved by having a performance contract for principals written into the Secondary Teachers Award. This would make it binding on all principals, and as y parents you would all have the same guarantee ppta president. Ruth chapman no matter what school your children attend. The contract would enable the board and the principal to write down what they agreed they would do to meet the goals of the school. The award provides for the board to take action if the principal doesn’t fulfil his or her part of the bargain and for the principal to take action if she or he has concerns about the board. We believe that this is the only sort of contract which meets the Government’s objectives for accountability and preserves the co-operative teamwork between principal and staff which has been shown to be essential for good education.
