Closing stalled

Political reporter

Continuing failure to resolve the carve-up of Crown lands under State sector reorganisation led to the Government introducing legislation to stall the demise of the Department of Lands for the third time yesterday. The Opposition spokesman on State-owned enterprise, Mr lan McLean, said the need for the bill showed the Government’s “S.O.E. shambles.”

The Department of Lands was to have ceased existing from December 31, 1987, and its assets swallowed up by other State agencies. This was set back by special legislation to December 31, 1988, then again on June 30, 1989. The S.O.E. Amendment Bill (No. 6) puts that date back another year to June 30, 1990.
