Use of chemicals
Sir, —I apologise to the Apple and Pear Marketing Board for the last sentence of my letter (May 17). I commented on the board’s advertisement, saying that it led the world in reducing pesticide usage. On reflection, I realise that I should not have commented upon the aims and motives behind the advertisement, of which, as an outsider, I have no direct knowledge. I do feel that the board has a hard job in front of it given its perceived commercial constraints and the residual chemical contamination of commercial orchard soils. I accept the organic philosophy that on health and ecological grounds no chemical spraying should be done at all and I try to grow the best food I can within the restraints of this overriding imperative. I hope that one day the board will come to see its operations in the same light.—Yours, etc., JOHN M. DALY. May 29, 1989.
