50M seek jobs

NZPA-Reuter Hong Kong About 50 million Chinese workers are wandering around the country searching for jobs, the China News Service said on Tuesday. The semi-official news agency monitored in Hong Kong said the “floating population,” five per cent of China’s population of one billion, was growing. The report said school drop-outs swelled the floating labour force looking for temporary factory jobs in cities. Earlier this year authorities in the southern province of Guangdong, bordering Hong Kong, sent 20 cargo train loads of job seekers back to their home provinces, it said.

One third of China’s criminals were from this population group, the agency said. Last year the authorities arrested 50,000 criminals who had fled their home towns.

The agency added that many of the unemployed itinerants joined organised crime societies and many girls became prostitutes.
