Bush presses ahead

NZPA-Reuter Bonn The United States President, George Bush, riding a wave of approval for his proposed arms and troop cuts, aims to add fresh momentum to his European diplomatic offensive today with an important speech on East-West relations.

Planned as the high point of a two-day visit to West Germany, the speech will build on the successful outcome of this week’s N.A.T.O. summit in Brussels, aides said.

Administration officials said Mr Bush might expand on former President Ronald Reagan’s so-called Berlin initiative, which called on the Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, to tear down the Berlin Wall and join the West in making the divided city a centre of sporting events and international conferences. Mr Bush will deliver the speech in Mainz, a Rhineland city near the home of the West German Chancellor, Helmut Kohl.
