Consultation on Spreydon flood worry
By ANABRIGHT HAY
The Christchurch Drainage Board will work in consultation with north-west Spreydon residents to ensure a subdivision near Edinburgh Street does not add to the area’s flooding problems.
The board has received a subdivision proposal for 2.lha off Edinburgh Street, comprising 21 lots and a reserve. The area is zoned urban and will outfall to the Harker-Neville Street area immediately upstream of the proposed pipeline in Neville Street, which has been postponed pending adoption of the Heathcote River Catchment Plan.
A drainage board member, Mr Ron Wright, speaking at last evening’s board meeting, said it was important that north-west Spreydon residents did not suffer through the delay in the plan and the work on the subdivision. He said they should not have to put up with further flooding as a result of the work.
The North-West Spreydon Ratepayers’ Associa-
tion has taken an active interest in preventing flooding in the Harker Street area in recent years. The board will recommend to the Christchurch City Council that the subdivision be approved subject to a water right. This would then allow local interest groups to have a say on how stormwater run-off is managed. A small temporary retention basin has been suggested by the board as a possible solution. A recommendation that the board continue to consult with north-west Spreydon residents on the issue was suggested by Mr Wright and passed by the board. Rates
Christchurch Drainage Board rates will not increase this year.
A report by the board’s finance committee states that because each authority’s capital value has increased at varying rates, depending on subdivision, development and new construction, the individual percentage movements are not constant.
, Christchurch, Waimairi, Heathcote, Paparua and Riccarton ratepayers whose capital values have not changed and who pay all three of the board’s rates will enjoy percentage decreases in cents paid per $lOOO of capital value.
The Drainage Board’s rate last year was $25,254,444.’ Tender for trees
A tender has been accepted for the removal of another 50 dead trees on Richardson and Clarendon terraces.
