In brief

‘Lower age’ More than 100 protesters with prams, pushchairs and babies crowded outside the Landmark Gallery, Nelson, yesterday to protest against the coffee house’s policy on breastfeeding. Placards reading “Lower the Eating Age” and "Please Don’t Feed The Baby” waved outside while about 30 patrons lunched inside. The protest followed publicity about a Stoke woman, Jacqueline van def Wert, who was asked not to breastfeed in the gallery a week ago. She has since taken the case to the Human Rights Commission. —PA. Driftnet opposition The Bay of Plenty Harbour Board has added its weight to a call to ban "wall of death” fishing boats .from New Zealand waters. The board endorsed a call by the Auckland Harbour Board for the Government to ban driftnet fishing vessels from New Zealand waters in the same way as nuclear ships. The board called on the Government to enlist the support of other South Pacific Forum countries in introducing an effective ban on the practice.—PA. ‘Genuine’ refugees A plan that would see many refugees in camps having to return to Vietnam is to be considered by an international conference in Geneva next month. The screening process to be considered by the conference is designed to find out which refugees are “genuine.” Only those who can prove they will be in danger of persecution if they return will be resettled. The Minister of Immigration, Mr Rodger, and the Immigration Service’s general manager, Peter Jones, will represent New Zealand .at the conference on June 1314. Mr Jones said the New Zealand position on the plan was still under consideration.—PA. Correction Mrs Marlene Westwood was incorrectly described as the owner-operator of Outbak Leatherware New Zealand, Ltd, in an article in “The Press” about Christchurch souvenir shops yesterday. Mrs Westwood is the shop manager. Mr Hank Tabak is the company’s owner.
