Clothing makers urged to relocate
Wellington reorter Auckland clothing manufacturers, who claim they cannot find staff, have been challenged to relocate in the South Island. Mr Jim Sutton (Lab., Waitaki) said there were towns like Geraldine, Temuka, Waimate or Oamaru which would welcome the manufacturers. A Garment Manufacturers’ Federation official had claimed this week that the industry in Auckland was struggling to fill 400 vacancies because of a lack of enthusiasm for work. People in the South Island would jump at the chance of a steady job in the clothing industry, said Mr Sutton. He advised Auckland employers to stop whingeing and look seriously at relocating.
