Lord Magic casts spell at Addington

By

JEFF SCOTT

Lord Magic threw down the gauntlet to Field Commander for Saturday’s showdown in the Star Time Caterers Queen’s Birthday Stakes at Ashburton with an impressive win at the Addington trials yesterday.

The Lordship colt bided his time until the 300 m in the C2-C4 pace before unleashing a big finish for junior reinsman, Gary Gilpin, defeating the pacemaker Panazz by a neck.

Trainer Brian Kerr was happy with Lord Magic’s time for the 2600 m of 3:21.4, and his sharp closing 400 m of 28.7 seconds. However Kerr is fully aware of Field Commander’s capabilities and said afterwards Lord Magic would need to reproduce a closing quarter every bit as quick on Saturday with Field Commander likely to be breathing down his neck. Field Commander, the winner of four of his five starts from Brian Saunders’ Methven team, and Lord Magic, the winner of four races and six times placed in 16 starts, are easily the two best-per-formed runners in the first leg of the Ashburton Club's T.A.B. double.

Lord Magic was a 3200 m winner at Addington on Anzac Day and a strong finishing third from the outside of the second row over 2600 m mobile at Addington on May 6 in his most recent racing.

Panazz maintained a strong clip in front yesterday and should not be hard to place in upcoming C2 events on this performance. Another C2 horse, Tramp, was third three and a half lengths, finishing solidly from the fourth line, with Captain Steel, which trailed, a neck back fourth.

Juvenile lame One of the easiest winners yesterday, Kotare Shah Mat, will miss next Monday’s New Zealand Sapling Stakes at Ashburton after coming off the track obviously lame in his near-front hoof. The Robert Asquithtrained colt, a game second to Winning Blue Chip at Addington last Friday, had just turned the tables on that runner in a five-horse trial, pulling clear from the trail to win by two lengths. Winning Blue Chip ran on from the back for second. “It took me a while to pull him up he was going that well,” but as soon as I did I realised something was amiss,” said Asquith. . “The vet has said there is a slight ray of hope that he has just ricked a joint but we won’t really know until he gets X-rays taken,” he said.

Asquith said Kotare Shah Mat, a winner at Palmerston North by four lengths in 2:34 (2000 m mobile) in March, was easily the best horse in his stable.

A compact colt by former top pacer, Kotare Legend, Kotare Shah Mat recorded 2:34.9 for the same journey yesterday, the leaders last 400 m taking 29.6.

Keyword, which has drawn badly in the second leg of the T.A.B. treble at Ashburton, finished strongly after trailing in the Cl pace to record

3:26.5 (2600 m beating Franco Man, Grand Boy and Diamond Fella, the latter being in the open over the last 800 m.

Brave Queen, which has no race on Saturday, finished strongly from the back to win the quicker CO mobile heat in 3:22.9, the leaders running their last 800 m in 59.9, while Mid Off (3:32.9, last 400 m in 29.4) and Sadowa (3:28.8), which clash in the third leg of the T.A.B. treble at Ashburton, were easy CO 2600 m winners from a stand.

Game Tempo, first emergency for the Crowes Services Maiden Trot at Ashburton, led throughout to score easily yesterday in 3:34.7, holding out Another Kim, which trailed, by a neck. Results:
