Obituary Mr Raymond Tinnelly

Mr Raymond Maurice Tinnelly, president of the New Zealand Bowling Umpires’ Association, and well known in bowls circles on the West Coast, has died in Greymouth. He was 65. Mr Tinnelly served overseas with the 27th Battalion in the Second World War in Italy and, on his return home, joined the Karoro Bowling Club when it was based on the hospital reserve. He was later a foundation member of the Greymouth R.S.A. Bowling Club, and then its president. A life member

of that club, he also became president of the West Coast Bowling Centre and a life member.

He was president of the West Coast Bowling Umpires’ Association before his election as national president last year.

Mr Tinnelly also represented the Greymouth R.S.A. at national club tournaments at Auckland and Napier. A keen player and supporter for the Celtic, later Marist Rugby club in Greymouth, he was its representative on the West Coast Rugby Union for

some time. Before the war, Mr Tinnelly was an apprentice with Blanchfield's Bakery anC Liter joined the wholesale fruit and produce firm o: Baillie and Neville, before becoming a long-serving staff member of John Burns, Ltd. Mr Tinnelly was the foundation organiser of the New Zealand 45s card-play-ing tournament, which is held in Greymouth each year. It was originally arranged by the R.S.A. Bowling Club. He is survived by his wife, five sons and two daughters.
