Chinese eager to settle in N.Z
PA Auckland Hong Kong and Taiwanese people continue to show strong interest in migrating to New Zealand — and one reason is the new business immigration scheme.
The number of residence visas issued to people from both States shows a big jump.
In the nine months to December 31, 677 residence visas were issued to prospective migrants from Hong Kong, compared with 467 in the year to March, 1988, and 137 the year before. During the same nine months, 902 residence visas were issued to Taiwanese nationals, compared with 89 in the year to March, 1988, and just eight the year before. An immigration service executive, Mr Jack Cavanagh, said much of the growth was due to a big increase in people coming under the business immi-
gration scheme. He said residence visas were issued overseas and allowed holders to get a residence permit as long as they arrived in New Zealand within a set time. A further 92 Hong Kong people and 29 Taiwanese who arrived as visitors were granted residence permits in the nine months to December 31. Mr Cavanagh said figures for the three months to March 31 would be ready soon. There was also a big leap — in the nine months to December 31 — in the number of Chinese nationals granted residence after arriving in New Zealand as visitors. A total of 550 Chinese visitors were granted residency in that period, compared with 196 in the year to March, 1988, and 140 the year before.
A further 39 Chinese were issued residence visas during the nine months.
