Two appear on murder charge
PA New Plymouth Two Taumarunui men were remanded without plea in the District Court yesterday on a charge of murdering a Manunui service station proprietor, Murray Shields, last week. Paul Wayne Tane, aged 23, unemployed, of Manunui, and Gregory Maunga Barrett, aged 22, a labourer, of no fixed abode, entered no pleas and were remanded in custody to the Taumarunui Court on June 20. When the charge was read there was no reaction from either defendant.
Counsel, Mr Mark McLennan, said he would be applying for bail in a High Court application “in due course.” Monty Le Wayne Tarawa, aged 22, bushman, of Taumarunui, appeared on a charge of receiving a man’s wristwatch valued at about $lOO. The police prosecutor, Senior-Sergeant Keith Coulton, said further inquiries were taking place into Tarawa’s activities and there was a possibility of further charges. He too was remanded in custody to appear in the District Court at Taumarunui on June 20.
