Ceiling holed in burglary

By

BARRY CLARKE

An Aranui mother of two moved into a new house last week-end to find burglars had broken in - by punching a hole through the ceiling. Mrs Sharon Williams is still pondering why someone would go to such lengths to break into a house, which had nothing in it apart from a few clothes. “As soon as I went in on Saturday morning, I thought ‘strike me dead, what’s gone on here?’ There was a big hole in the ceiling,” she said last evening. “They’d got into the washhouse, but for some reason couldn’t get through the door to the rest of the house. They got up through the man-hole, went along the ceiling and broke a hole to get into the house. “At first I thought there must have been a strong wind which brought my ceiling down.” Nothing was taken from the house. The burglars left through the front door and are believed to have thrown a stone through a window while decamping. “I’m glad I didn’t move my things in until the week-end. But the insulation fibres in the ceiling made a big mess. The stuff was everywhere,” she said. To ward off any more burglars from her Mattlngley Street Housing Corporation house, Mrs Williams now has a dog. “It’s got a very large bark ... not to mention the bite,” she said.
