Hopes of finding girl alive diminish

Hopes of finding the Wellington teen-ager, Karla Cardno, alive were diminishing, the police said yesterday. Senior-Sergeant Joe Franklin, of Lower Hutt, said: “We are certainly very, very worried now.”
Karla, aged 13, disappeared last Friday evening after being seen in a distressed state at the Taita shops. Information on possible sightings of the Hutt Valley High School pupil jammed the police switchboard several times yesterday. This had helped pin down Karla’s movements more precisely, said Senior-Sergeant Franklin.
She had been seen with a Maori or Polynesian man shortly before her disappearance. Karla was seen crossing the road with the man, and going into a shop with him at Taita, he said.
She was later seen at a dairy there, and to go to into a video parlour in a distressed state. She was last seen cycling down the road towards her home about 7.05 p.m. The bicycle and her shopping were found about 7.30 p.m. by her mother 200 m from their home.
Thirty-eight police investigators with a search team of 70, including the Army, have been combing the Taita area for clues.
