Acid spillage

A man suffered burns during a big sulphuric acid spillage in Dunedin yesterday. The Dunedin-based National Poisons Information Centre was called out to help after the valve on a 1000-litre tank broke about 10 a.m. at Fletcher Fishing in Parry Street. A company employee, aged 50, who was working on the tank suffered burns. He was reported to be in a satisfactory condition in Dunedin Hospital last evening. Assistant Commander Bill Petrie of the Dunedin Fire Service, said most of the tanks contents poured into stormwater drains and the nearby Leith Stream. The Poisons Centre, the Otago Harbour Board, the Otago Catchment Board, and the Dunedin Area Health Board were alerted. A spokesman for the Harbour Board said the acid would be highly diluted by the time it reached the harbour, about the spillage. Eight appliances attended tge spillage.
