Plug for first-term National M.P.S
By PATTRICK SMELLIE in Wellington First-term Opposition members of Parliament got a plug last evening from the Opposition’s spokeswoman on finance, Miss Ruth Richardson. Revealing that she had decided to become a member of Parliament at the age of 15, Miss Richardson went on to sing the praises of several of the M.P.s who came into Parliament for the first time in 1987. “Public profiles and headlines are hard to get when you’re a new M.P., especially when you’re in Opposition,” she said.
Miss Richardson singled out Mrs Jenny Shipley, of Ashburton; Messrs Maurice Williamson, of Pakuranga; John Luxton, of Matamata; Rob Munro, of Invercargill; Jeff Grant, of Awarua; and Murray McCully, of East Coast Bays. Not among Miss Richardson’s choices were the member for Hobson, Mr Ross Meurant, Mr Wyatt Creech (Wairarapa), Mr Robert Anderson (Kaimai), Mr Warren Kyd (Clevedon), and Mr John Carter (Bay of Islands).
Miss Richardson said her own single-minded-ness had proved both an asset and a liability in politics.
