Sport Three teams share basketball trophy

University, Aranui and Baisweil have shared the Patron’s Trophy section of the women’s division one basketball competition after the final round of games were concluded at Cowles Stadium on Saturday. University, which was upset by Baisweil the previous week, bounced back to hammer Rangiora, 62-36, while Baisweil was lucky to scrape home, 65-61, against Butlers, to each grab a share of the trophy. The defending champion, Aranui, had the bye this week. Each team recorded five wins and one loss in the round.

Burnham narrowly beat Checkers, 73-66, in the early encounter, and the five league players in the game made for a high scoring encounter. Burnham shared fourth place with Butlers, each recording two wins, while Rangiora and Checkers share the wooden spoon with one win each.

Butlers, which returned to the A grade competition this season, was unlucky not to have beaten Baisweil. It had to contend with three players absent as well as compete against a Baisweil with two extra league players.

Final placings in the Patron’s trophy competition were:—

Gueneie 8, R- Forde I, T. Byron C, R. Walker 4, S. Garden 4) beat Butlers 41 (S. Camp 1». J. Hartley 14, R. Duncan I, M. M“ ll any 5, N. Hall 4, B. Palmer 4, It Ray 2,1. McGrath 2). Half-time, Butlers 35-27 Referees: Paul Hadley and, CaM Fahey.

Isobel Hartley gave Butlers an encouraging start, sinking an early three-pointer and four other baskets to push Butlers ahead 13-6 after only six minutes.

Chris Buchanan showed encouraging form early for Halswell but its teamwork lacked co-ordi-nation and direction.

Sue Bennie, Sue Garden and Mandy Collins added depth to Halswell, which was missing Marinda Van Vuuren and Sally Elliott. It took some time before Halswell could get its teamwork together though and Butlers slipped out to a 35-27 lead at half-time.

A former league team member, Raelene Forde, fired up Halswell with some penetrating play in the second half while the promising Nickey Guenole, a former West Coast representative, helped keep Halswell's momentum rolling. Butlers’ teamwork began to falter under constant Halswell pressure; however, Robin Duncan and the elusive Sue Camp, a Bendon league netball player, kept Butlers ahead, 47-43 after nine minutes.

Tracey Byron put fresh life into Baisweil’s efforts, scoring from several penetrating runs. She levelled the match at 47-47 in the eleventh minute, but Camp and Duncan kept Butlers narrowly in front. Duncan missed all four attempts at the free-throw line, allowing Byron and Collins to ease Halswell ahead, 61-56 with five minutes remaining. Butlers had one late chance to tie the game with 10 seconds remaining, but Marama Mullany rushed her shot and Bennie scored at the other end. Bennie slotted many soft outside shots in collecting 14 points, while Buchanan produced a valuable 12 points. Camp scored an impressive 18 points while Hartley finished with a consistent 16 points to top the season’s scoring. Universith <2 (J. Harris 19, N. Hanham 11, C Patterson It, T. Whittaker It,. R. Roz Buick and Trina Whittaker kept University’s score moving, pushing ahead 31-15 by half-time. With Harris dominating play at both ends of the court, University forged further ahead in the second spell, leading 44-24 in the tenth minute and 54-30 after 15 minutes. Darlene Walker, a league substitute player, was kept restricted, while Selina Frost and Kirstin Young showed encouraging efforts for Rangiora. Harris finished with a personal best of 19 points while Patterson, Hanham and Whittaker all reached double figures. Minties 73 (E. Duffey 18, M. Dunn 16, R. Milner 10, S. Bennett 10, A. Although Checkers — again without Debbie Chase and Stephanie Schrool — slowly eased ahead of Burnham, 37-33 by halftime, while Sue Bennett and Rhonda Milner gave Burnham added depth.

Bennett and Milner worked hard to give Burnham the lead 5347 after nine minutes, while the evergreen Sharon Constable returned from a long injury break, scoring three baskets for Checkers.

Akkerman kept Checkers in touch with some baskets in the middle stages but Duffey (18 points) and Dunn (16 points) eased Bumham into a matchwinnina position, 67-66, with a minutelremaining.
