AUSTRALIA $Aust. gives impetus

NZPA-AAP Sydney Strong support tor cur-rency-sensitive leading issues helped the Australian sharemarket to a slightly firmer level by the close of floor trading yesterday. BHP surged 26c to 854, News Corporation rose 20c to 1430 and the miner, CRA, jumped 12c to 900.

Brokers said the sharemarket also gained support from the rise in bond yields 'and the June share price index (SPI) futures contract.

By the close of computer trading, the all-ordinaries index was 5.0 points higher at 1535.9, while the all industrials was down 2.4 at 2517. The all-resources was up 9.9 at 799.2 and the gold marker 7.5 at 1431.3.

"The sharemarket was supported by the weaker Australian dollar attracting investment to the resource sector and currency related industrial stocks,” one broker said. Entrepreneurial stocks were mixed. Brierley Investments rose 6c to 130 and Adsteam 2c to 650, while Bond Corporation fell 8c to 117 and Bond Media 2c to 33. Bond Corporation subsidiary, Bell Group, fell 13c to 67.

Bank stocks were mixed. Westpac lost 6c to 514, while ANZ gained 2c to 510. National Australia was steady at 642.

Among gold miners, North Flinders Mines soared 30c to 230 on market speculation it may launch a take-over bid for Paringa Mining and Exploration, which surged 31c to 85.

Among other miners, Western Mining and Bougainville Copper each lifted 8c to 508 and 218 respectively.

National turnover was 89.8 million shares, worth sAust22l.7M, as falls led rises 232 to 132.
