Labour policies

Sir,—A survey of business opinion (May 26) shows increasing optimism, but this is not so much that there is cause for optimism as the fact that business people know that about the only certainty left in New Zealand is that business always booms just before elections and contracts after elections. Businessmen also know that if this Government is to have any hope of re-election the good news must start flowing very soon because the political polls show how fed up the public have become with the negative environment we have all endured so unnecessarily for far too long. No matter what this Government does, people will not, and should not, forget the merciless squeeze everyone was subjected to after the last election; but, then, another survey recently showed that only 12 per cent of the population are politically aware, yet 82 per cent are keen shoppers. No wonder that with such superficial priorities we have the Government we deserve — the “old” Labour Party. Apart from creating economic and racial chaos, the "old” Labour Party is now busy considering liberalising booze and pot. Thank goodness there is an election soon.—Yours, etc., W. J. C. ROYDS. May 26, 1989.
