War canoe to be built
A full-size war canoe will be built in Marlborough for the 1990 celebrations at Waitangi next February. Nationally, about 20 war canoes are being built for the celebrations, but the Marlborough project is the only one in the South Island. The 25m double-hull canoe will have the outward appearance of canoes used by the Maori people 200 years ago, but modern technology will be used to keep costs and weight down. Hulls will be constructed from fibreglass, but the carved prow and stern pieces will be made in the traditional totara.—PA.
