Arab meeting friendly
NZPA-Reuter Casablanca An Arab League summit opened on a conciliatory note but goes into its second day today with no firm agreement on the thorny problems of Lebanon and the Palestinians. Before the formal summit opening, the host, King Hassan of Morocco, and the Algerian President, Chadli Benjedid, engineered a side meeting between the leaders of moderate Egypt and its radical foes, Libya and Syria.
The Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak, shook hands with his fiercest Arab critic, Muammar Gadaffi, of Libya, and also met the Syrian President, Hafez al-Assad, during what an Egyptian delegate described as a civilised half-hour meeting. After keynote speeches by Mr Mubarak and King Hassan at the opening session, a brown-robed Colonel Gadaffi hugged the Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, whose peace strategy has often drawn Libyan scorn.
Libya’s Foreign Minister, Jaddallah Azzouz al-Talhi, later voiced approval for Mr Mubarak’s address, which stressed Arab solidarity.
