Train toll 22 The death toll in a train crash 500 km north of Bangkok has risen to 22. An official in Lampang, a town close to the scene of the disaster, said the toll was likely to rise further as more bodies were believed trapped in the wreckage of the train that derailed and plunged into a ravine.—Bangkok. Menem must wait The Argentine President, Raul Alfonsin, said he would see out his full six-year term of office after talks on an early handover of power to President-Elect Carlos Menem had broken down. His statement was followed by the resignation of his Cabinet.—Buenos Taiwan P.M. Lee Huan, the popular secretary-general of Taiwan’s Nationalist party, was nominated Prime Minister to lead the Government into crucial elections this year. The nomination of Mr Lee, aged 71, by President Lee Teng-hui was confirmed at a weekly meeting of the ruling party’s policy-making central standing committee. It still needs Parliamentary approval.—Taipei.
