Pollution fears spark objections
Pollution and flooding will result from a stormwater drainage proposal for an industrial area to the south-west of the city, say the scheme's opponents. The Christchurch Drainage Board has come up with a long-term stormwater drainage scheme for the Halswell Junction Road industrial area west of Springs Road.
But opponents say the scheme will pollute Knights Stream, used for irrigation and stock watering, and cause additional flooding to properties. They also believe
there is a risk of pollution to drinking wells. The Drainage Board’s chief engineer, Mr Peter Hunt, said some of these fears were understandable but it was a question of balance. “It is a question of balancing the needs of the Halswell Junction Road area against the problems of property owners,” he said. The Drainage Board has applied to the North Canterbury Catchment Board for water rights. Eleven objections have been lodged, arid a special tribunal will hear the dispute.
