Chch barrister appointed Q.C.
A Christchurch barrister, Mr Nigel Hampton, is among three new Queen’s Counsel announced yesterday by the AttorneyGeneral, Mr Palmer. The others are Mr Walter Iles, of Wellington, who is the Chief Parliamentary Counsel and Compiler of Statutes; and Mr John Laurenson, of New Plymouth, who was Crown Solicitor at New Plymouth from 1970 until 1988 when he began practice as a barrister.
Mr Hampton was educated at Southbridge District High School and St Andrew’s College. He attended the University of Canterbury, graduating with a law degree in 1964. He was a partner in the Christchurch firm of R. A. Young, Hunter and Company, for 22 years. Mr Hampton was the senior partner when he left the firm last year to begin his own practice as a barrister.
Since 1971, Mr Hampton has served on various committees and the Council of the Canterbury District Law Society, and was president of the society in 1986-87.
He has served on the council and executive committee of the New Zealand Law Society and
was the South Island vicepresident in 1987-88. He was a member of the committee which organised the first duty solicitor scheme in New Zealand. From 1974 to 1981, he was a member of the Canterbury District Legal Aid Committee and was a member of the Legal Aid Authority from 1981 to 1986. Mr Hampton has been a member of the Criminal Law Reform Committee and the Courts Consultative Committee. He was awarded the 0.8. E. in 1988 for services to the legal profession.
