Thief nets shop’s takings
By ROBYN BRISTOW An opportunist may have got more than he or she bargained for after breaking into a van outside a Kaiapoi tavern.
The' van’s owner, Mr Ross Meyerhoff, of Helrose Quality Meats in Williams Street, parked his red Subaru van in the car-park of the Kaikanui Tavern. He tucked his shop’s takings in among some sausages before going into the tavern for a drink.
A thief, probably attracted by the 24kg of vacuum-packed sausages in the van, would have found also $l5OO in cash and $4OOO in cheques.
Constable Dennis McGuire of the Kaiapoi police said the theft occurred between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Friday.
