Robert Gordon (Papanui) won the annual Kiwi Lager 60km handicap cycle race on Sunday with a fine ride on his own for most of the distance.

Seventy-four of the 125 entrants started in persistent rain and cold temperatures with 61 riders completing the tough course in the Hornby promoted event. Starting at Halswell, riders had a 20km flat ride before tackling the ascent of Gebbies Pass. Making the most of their 30min handicap start, Linda O’Brien, Bridget Butterfield and Phillipa Hogarth were the first riders over the Gebbies Pass summit. The faster riders on the shorter handicap marks were making inroads into the leaders time advantage but were not helped as they encountered a flock of sheep on the road at the commencement of the Gebbies Pass climb. The fast descent of Gebbies Pass took riders through Teddjngton toward Charteris

Bay. At the 30km mark, Linda O’Brien had ridden away on her own to be Imin 13s ahead of Butterfield with Rosalind Reekie coming into contention a further 5s in arrears.

At this point Robert Gordon, having ridden away from the other 21 min group, appeared as a danger man just two minutes behind the leader. The whole field was closing up with the fast moving 11-rider scratch bunch having made up almost half of the time gap to the leaders.

The route to the turn at Charteris Bay, around the hilly Andersons Road loop, assisted the stronger riders gain more time on the leaders. At Teddington, on the return journey, Gordon moved into the lead ahead of Reekie and O’Brien. His strong climbing ability showed through as he gained two minutes over these two riders on the climb up Gebbies Pass.

The scratch group, with Peter Coates, Jason Smith, Stuart Lowe, Brendan Hart, Chris Bransley and Marcus Flack showing up strongly, had accumulated a large group of riders as they tackled the climb to the Gebbies Pass summit. Over the hill top and it was a fast run for the final 20km.

Eighteen kilometres from the finish, Gordon was comfortably in the lead by two minutes from Reekie and O’Brien, with Robbie McDonald on the scene a further minute in arrears.

The scratch group and its followers were still nine minutes behind the leader. Gordon continued his fine solo ride to cross the line in the Old Tai Tapu Road near Halswell, in 1 hour 56min 235, 3min 43s ahead of Rosalind Reekie. Robbie McDonald and Linda O'Brien crossed the line for third and fourth places and were the only riders to beat the scratch riders home.

Peter Coates won the sprint for fifth place and fastest time honours just ahead of Brendan Hart and Stuart Lowe. Jason Smith, who originally recorded the fastest time, was disqualified for motor pacing during the race.
