Popular evening classes
A number of Christchurch high schools are running very successful investing courses through their adult education programmes. Most schools with investment courses reported an increased interest last term.
Burnside High School had 45 people attending. In fact, the investment course proved to be the most popular evening class the school offered. Mairehau, Hillmorton, Cashmere and Aranui high schools had good attendances.
“We are not sure if people are finally putting the sharemarket crash behind them, or if they are just eager to find out about all • the safer investments available, but we are finding increased interest each term,” said Richard Howitt of Hillmorton High School.
Those who have attended a previous investing course are obviously spreading the word. “We have been amazed by the number of people who have contacted our office to tell us how good the course was,” said Robyn Sutherland of Kaiapoi High School. Kaiapoi ran its first investment course last term. Tutors for all the investment courses are Charles Drace and Mike Macfarlane of Investor Link Securities; and Tim Preston of Hamilton, Hindin and Greene.
This term, investing courses are being offered at the following schools: Mairehau High School, starting Monday, May 29 (ph. 853-145); Burnside High School, starting Tuesday, May 30 (ph. 588383); Cashmere High School, starting Tuesday, May 30 (ph. 39-129); Hillmorton High School, starting Wednesday, May 31 (ph. 385-119); Kaiapoi High School, starting Thursday, June 1 (ph. 276-129). Further information can be obtained direct from the schools’ offices.
