Likud tussle looms
NZPA-Reuter Jerusalem
The Hawkish Israeli Industry Minister, Ariel Sharon, is arming himself for a showdown with the Prime Minister, Yitzhak Shamir, that could end in a contest for leadership of the Rightwing Likud party. Mr Sharon did not attend yesterday’s Parliamentary vote to approve Mr Shamir’s Middle East peace Initiative, choosing instead to convene a meeting of fellow party hawks at his home in the heart of Arab East Jerusalem.
Mr Shamir’s plan, drafted with the Defence Minister, Yitzhak Rabin, centres on elections in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip to choose Palestinian negotiators for peace talks with Israel.
