Home deliveries increase for milk suppliers
Home milk deliveries in Christchurch are increasing in spite of the loss of about 10 vendors since the change of control from the Milk Board to producer groups. The newly-elected president of the Canterbury Milk Vendors’ Association, Mr John Armiger, said home delivery in Christchurch was stronger than the national situation reported by the president of the Dominion
Federation of Milk Vendors, Mr John Houlihan, recently. Mr Houlihan said 300 vendors had been forced out of their rounds by the industry switch. “In Christchurch the situation is nothing like that,” Mr Armiger said. About 10 vendors in Christchurch left the industry because their rounds were too small and not economic. “Those rounds have
been used to strengthen the viability of others,” he said. Christchurch vendors negotiated contracts with their processor, Canterbury Dairy Farmers, Ltd, and Mr Armiger said he considered they were now in a better situation than when they were controlled by the Milk Board. Vendors were actively promoting themselves and their products and home delivery sales were increasing.
