Few have left party—survey

Only 27 members of the Sydenham electorate of the Labour Party have chosen to resign since the formation of the New Labour Party, according to a telephone survey conducted in the electorate recently. The results of the survey were released at a combined branch meeting last evening. The party’s marginal seats organiser, Mr Pete Hodgson, said that before the formation of the New Labour Party there were 148 financial members in the electorate, of whom 120 were contacted in the survey. He said only 27 had chosen to resign, of whom 19 resigned when the new party was formed. “Jim Anderton has badly overestimated the level of support he thought he would receive.” The overwhelming majority of the party had decided to stay put, he said.
