Country superior
Superb understanding between Bruce Deans at halfback and Richard Ewens at No. 8 was a big factor in Canterbury Country’s 31-16 win over Otago subunions in Balclutha yesterday. Deans was a shrewd general in the pivotal position and Ewens, a hard driving forward, scored two tries through the thrust of his pack and his combination with his halfback. Canterbury used the rolling maul to good effect in the second half and dominated second phase possession, winning the rucks and mauls by 25-9. Canterbury Country 31 (Ewens, 2, Clarke tries; P. Fitzpatrick two conversions, five penalty goals) beat Otago Country 16 (G. Blakeley, R. Henderson tries; N. Muir conversion, two penalty goals). Canterbury Country under-21 beat its Otago counterpart in the early match by 21-9.
