Bishop in feature

Clive Bishop will be boxing at the Richmond Working Men’s Club on Sunday when he might have been travelling to Brisbane as a member of the national squad. The chance to compete in two Australian tournaments, the first of them on Monday, was offered to Bishop when Johnny Wallace (Hutt Valley) made himself unavailable.

But Bishop turned down the opportunity because of work commitments and will instead be trading blows with Dean Calvert in a feature bout at the Canterbury Boxing Association’s Sunday tournament.

The matching brings, together the 1987 New Zealand senior lightweight champion, Bishop (from the Papanui

gymnasium), and the reigning national intermediate lightweight title-holder, Calvert (Bell’s gymnasium). Calvert is one of several members of Peter Bell’s squad who will be in action while Mr Bell, as the national team’s assistant trainer, Michael Bell and Jason Eade travel to take on the Australians.

The recent fine performance given by Danny Morris (Bell’s) against Nelson’s New Zealand representative, Barry Galbraith, should be an encouragement when he meets up with Brett Vincent (Hutt Valley) on Sunday. So convincing has Morris been in his comeback bid that he cannot be discounted as a Commonwealth Games trialist. He has been keeping

himself busy in training and competition. Meanwhile, Galbraith and Eade will be seeking to consolidate their claims to the Games welterweight nomination in Australian rings. Super heavyweight contests have been rare in Christchurch in recent seasons, but the national senior improvers’ class champion, Tony Fiso (Hutt Valley), will oppose Daniel Campbell (Bell’s) on Sunday.

Fiso is trained by Bill Byrne at Alan Scaife’s gymnasium, while Campbell represented Canterbury at the last New Zealand senior improvers’ heavyweight championship when with his former Papanui gymnasium. About 12 bouts are scheduled for Sunday.
