Oratory win to Chch

A Christchurch school pupil, Maria Wallace, has won a national competition for oratory. Miss Wallace, of Ngai Tahu descent, represented Te Wai Pounamu (the South Island) at the national conference of the Maori Women’s Welfare

League in Rotorua! last week. She won the Ejipu e Rea Trophy for thi.best junior girl orator. -I The theme for theeompetitions was “WhakOupu Kia Kotahi” — “Other our resources ant; be strong.” ii

Miss Wallace, a fourth former at Avonside Girls’ High and a resident at Te Wai Pounamu Maori Girls’ College, takes Maori Studies at school and will take- part in the regional Maori speech competitions held at Hagley High School on May 26.
