Disabled jumper takes his chair

PA Wanganui Bungee-jumping is good fun, a paraplegic, Mr Paul Speight, said yesterday, after a jump over a 50m viaduct. Mr Speight, aged 35, was one of about 100 people who took advantage of a bungee-jump company’s offer of free jumps. “It was a totally new sensation,” said Mr Speight, who made the jump in his wheelchair. “They told me I’d need my wheelchair at the bottom, so instead of someone carrying it down they just strapped me to the chair,” he said. He was apprehensive at the beginning. “Your heart is in your mouth. I watched other people jump — there was quite a queue — and then they said ‘your’re next,’ and I had no option,” he said. He did not “jump as much as roll off” Hapuawhenua Viaduct near Ohakune.
