Australia gains Army contract
PA Dunedin A New Zealand Army decision to award a contract for uniform material to an Australian firm has cost 15 jobs in the wool industry, the New Zealand Woollen Mills’ Association president, Mr David Braithwaite, . says. The Army contract was for 33,000 m of fabric, and was lost because the Australian wool industry was subsidised by its Government, he said. He said Australian wool producers were paid a “bounty” for each metre of yarn produced, and this was passed directly to the
woollen mills. “We’re not asking for subsidies Here, but we have asked for a level playing field with Australia.” Mr Braithwaite said the three-year contract would have provided 15 full-time jobs. Mr Braithwaite, also chief executive of the Alliance Wool Group, said fewer people than previously expected would be laid off from the Alliance Textiles, Ltd, Milton plant in the next few weeks. He said 33 workers would now be laid off, instead of 38.
