Aotea Centre still hopes for Games

The new Aotea Centre may yet be used as the venue for weightlifting during next year's Commonwealth Games in Auckland. The Games organisers, however, are still working on the principle that the centre will not be finished in time for the international event, in January and February. The Games chairman, Mr David Johnson, said in London that weightlifting, along with judo and boxing, was scheduled to be held at the Auckland Show Grounds. It was originally intended that at least one sport would be held at Auckland’s new showpiece venue, the Aotea Centre. But Mr Johnson told a briefing for the British press that construction of the centre had dropped behind schedule. “We’re working on the principle that it won’t be ready,” he said. “If, however, a miracle happens, weightlifting will go back there, but not unless we get firm undertakings from both the council and the contractors within the next month or so.”
