Woman hit, robbed

PA Auckland Mrs Jocelyn Gladwell, aged 66, says she was worried about the man who kept near her as she walked along the shoreline to Campbells Bay. She had lived in the area 40 years and did not believe she would be attacked in broad daylight. But when she turned around the man was behind her holding an oval-shaped rock about 20cm long. He hit her twice above the left ear and once on the back, knocking her to the ground, and then tried to wrench her purse from her. “I said take my purse, which he did. If he had asked for money in the first place I would have given it to him,” Mrs

Gladwell said. The purse has since been recovered but with $lOO missing. The attack happened about 2 p.m. as Mrs Gladwell made her way back to Campbells Bay after shopping. When the man first showed up from a section by the walkway Mrs Gladwell thought he must be a workman and did not take much notice of him. Because the tide was in she was walking along rocks on the cliff side of the walkway and realised the man was following her. The attack left Mrs Gladwell with stitches to the head and a painful back. An unemployed man, aged 20, was to appear in the District Court, at North Shore, charged with aggravated robbery.
