Dogs fail in search

The search for the missing English tramper in the Arthur’s Pass area was called off late yesterday. Three police dogs failed to find Mr Paul Lobendahn, aged 23, who is presumed dead on the treacherous Avalanche Peak. The dogs were called in as a last resort to find Mr Lobendahn, who went missing a week ago. “We thought the dogs might have been able to pick up a scent, but there was nothing,” a search spokesman, Mr Pete

Simpson, said. "We won’t go back in now, unless something develops.” Meanwhile, six overdue Christchurch trampers yesterday walked out of the Waimakariri River area, near Arthur’s Pass. The party had agreed to meet four other trampers at Carrington Hut, near the head of the river, but they could not find the rendezvous point. They stayed at Antigrow Hut instead and were found safe and well by national park staff.
