Interest rate activists waiting
Plans to form an interest rate pressure group in Christchurch have been put on hold since the formation this week of a coalition of sector groups. Mr Austin Holmes, whose advertisement last week for activists drew scores of volunteers, said most were prepared to see what resulted from the alliance of Federated Farmers, the Manufacturers’ Federation, the Tourist Industry Federation and the Consumers’ Institute. Mr Holmes said he arranged a public meeting for May 30 to inaugurate the yet-to-be-named association, but prospective members had decided to await developments. Mr Holmes said he heard the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, say on radio that if the banks did not lower interest rats in four weeks the Government would act to bring them down.
