Town crier proposal gets council backing
Christchurch’s town crier got Christchurch City Council approval last evening. An allocation of $6OOO for the crier’s costume and wages was made and if that sum survives the budget process, the crier should soon be on city streets. Sponsorship for the crier will be investigated. Bungee jumping An Auckland company, Bungy Jumpers, Ltd, has been given permission for a six months trial of bungee jumping at the Queen Elizabeth II Park pool. The trial, likely to begin in August, will use a 16m tower at the side of the diving well, with a launching platform over the pool. The trial will be the responsibility of the com-
pany, which will provide staff and safety supervision. Work scheme rejected A Christchurch initiative for youth work experience has been rejected by the New Zealand Employment Service. Seven months ago the Christchurch City Council proposed a Youth Employment Scheme, which would provide six to 10 weeks work for 280 people a year. It provided $74,000 in this year’s budget to be ratified next week, for the Y.E.S. programme. The employment service’s area general manager, Mr E. L. Gillum, gave two reasons for the scheme’s rejection. Funding for it would have to
come from the Job Opportunities Scheme which was already fully committed and Y.E.S. would cut across work-based programmes already being run in Christchurch. The scheme’s initiator, Cr Vicki Buck, said that if action had been taken when the scheme was first proposed funds would have been available. Bridge alterations The Victoria Square bridge alterations will cost more than expected. Cost increases of $21,000 to an original budget of $115,000 were approved. The bridge will have a hole cut in its base to provide a view of the river below and railing, seating and lighting will be installed.
