Wizard upstaged by referee
PA Auckland Christchurch’s famous Wizard was upstaged by little-known West Coaster Paddy Byrne as Auckland thrashed Canterbury, 50-12, in Sunday’s Carlaw Park rugby league clash. The Wizard’s pre-match spells and potions were rendered useless when referee Byrne unveiled some more basic sorcery in the twentieth minute, pointing the bone at the top
Canterbury forward, Logan Edwards, and causing him to disappear for the rest of the match. Mr Byrne ruined the game as a spectacle by dispatching Edwards for a marginally high hit on Francis Leota with the scores locked at 4all. No amount of magic was going to save Canterbury after that. It fought bravely to hold Auckland to 22-12 after 60 minutes but collapsed be-
fore a free-running final quarter onslaught when the home side ran in five tries. The Canterbury coach, Frank Endacott said he was proud of the way his players strove to overcome the handicap of Edwards’ loss. But as for the Wizard — he is sacked. “I’d be quite happy to leave him here,” Mr Endacott said after the match.
