Clerical award

Sir,—Like many other clerical workers, I was dismayed at the attitude of Steve Marshall of the Employers’ Association on television (May 3) towards the breakdown of our award talks. It seems the employers have no intention of settling the award, using Clause 13 as an excuse in an attempt to break this union. The Employers’ Association has sent a letter to its members suggesting that they pay the 4 per cent. This, in itself, is an indication. While we may get the 4 per cent it will not help in settling the award, which ran out in December, 1988. This is a great blow to workers as our conditions have been gained over many years of. hard work by the union. Maybe the Employers’ Association will be happy when it can once again have little girls pushed up chimneys, because to give away clauses in our award with nothing in return will be the first step backwards. —Yours, etc.,

M. J. RICH. May 10, 1989.
