Fresh, spontaneous radio in Footprints on the Air, Plains FM 5.50 p.m. today. Kaiapoi High School students present their own programme. Hagley High School students get their chance in Bivouac, same time tomorrow afternoon. Bix Beiderbecke and Charley Barnet are among the Bs in Robert Parker’s The A to Z of Jazz, Concert Programme 7.30 this evening. Others featuring in classic jazz on original recordings reproduced in high-quality stereo are Mildred Bailey, Billy Banks, Blue Lou Barker, Len Barnard, Count Basie and Sidney Bechet.
Composer Arnold Schoenberg fled from the Nazis in Europe to Hollywood only to find misunderstanding and rejection there in his last 18 years. His 12-ndte method of composition now sees him recognised as a giant of 20th-century music.
Jeremy Siepman talks with the composer’s family, friends and pupils in Schoenberg in Hollywood Concert Programme 9 tomorrow evening. Passing up the opportunity of being a composer in her own right, Imogen . Holst dedicated herself instead to the music of her father and that of Benjamin Britten. She is profiled in Imogen Holst: Daughter of the Planets, National Radio 8.05 tomorrow evening. This 8.8. C. feature was written and is presented by John Amis. “Casablanca,” made nearly 50 years ago, still pulls in the audiences. You Must Remember This, National Radio 8.05 Wednesday evening, tells what went into making the film that became a classic. Ronald Reagan might have taken the Humphrey Bogart role and Ingrid Bergman was second choice for her part. Fascinating; don’t forget to listen.
