Coleridge fleece wins top award

A Merino ewe fleece entered by Mr Bob Brown, of Lake Coleridge, has won the 1989 finewool Golden Fleece award. The 21.2 micron fleece, with a yield of 77.8 per cent, was grown on Mr Brown’s high country Glenthorne station.

The champion strongwool award went to a Romney shorn hogget fleece of 39 microns and a yield of 84 per cent, from the Turanganui Stud, of Featherston.

The contest, sponsored by the Woolbrokers’ Association, attracted 256 entries. The standard of entries was described as good considering the dry season.

The judges, Mr Maurice Bellamy, wool manager for Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Christchurch, and Mr Baxter McKeown, executive wool officer for Wrightson, Christchurch, said the champion Merino fleece was of exceptional quality. It won by half a point ahead of a Merino

ram fleece from A. D. Paterson, Ranfurly. Winners of individual classes included Stevenson Brothers (Rangiora) in the Merino woolly hogget and halfbred ram section: J. R. and T. J. Burrows (Culverden), Corriedale ewe; Jedburgh Farm (Cheviot), Corriedale woolly hogget; D. C. Cooper (Ashburton), Coopworth or crossbred ewe; A. Bishen (Rangiora), Lincoln ram; Q. and D. Mitchell (Fairlie), Lincoln ewe and Lincoln shorn hogget. "
