Public tackles shoplift suspect

The Riccarton community constable, Constable Les Maloney, has thanked members of the public who helped catch an alleged shop-lifter in the Farmers department store in Riccarton yesterday afternoon.
Constable Maloney said he was chasing the man through the store about 3.30 p.m., when a customer “lowered him with a fine tackle.”
“If Grizz Wyllie had been there, he would be in for an All Black trial.” The man continued to struggle, and it took another six or eight customers and staff to subdue him, Constable Maloney said. Constable Maloney had been called by shop staff who alleged the man had put an item under his clothing. When spoken to outside the shop, the suspect ran back in.
