Top seed bounced

NZPA-Reuter

Charleston, South Carolina

Tim Wilkison and the chair umpire combined to bounce the top seed, Brad Gilbert, from the $U5220,000 U.S. Clay Court tennis championships yesterday. Gilbert was so frustrated with his play against his unseeded fellow American that after an unforced error while behind 1-5 in the second set he smashed a ball into the stands. Gilbert, who lost the first set, 6-0, was given a game penalty for ball abuse by the American chair umpire, Rich Kauffman, ending the match that the top seed appeared about to lose on his own. Earlier in the second set, the No. 16 ranked player, Gilbert, had smashed his racket to the ground and received a point penalty.
