Anti-rape help?
By
BARRY CLARKE
Volunteer “police” could be used in the hunt for a rapist stalking Christchurch, a former British inspector, Mr Alex Smith, said yesterday. If volunteers were available in New Zealand they would patrol the suburbs where the rapist had struck, he said.
The former Kent police inspector recruited and trained volunteers, or specials, in England and
said they were needed in New Zealand. "You would have two-man patrols walking the streets in the areas where the rapist is believed to be operating,” said Mr Smith.
“They become the eyes and ears of the regular police.” A police report commissioned last July has recommended that volunteers assist the police in routine duties.
