Export apples set for Europe
Lyttelton’s first general cargo shipment of export apples will leave for Europe this week. Nearly 49,000 cartons of Braeburn, Red Delicious and Premier red variety apples are being loaded in the Peruvian Reefer at Lyttelton. Increased plantings are expected to boost the New Zealand export apple crop about 40 per cent oyer the next four years. >
Apples have been exported in containers through Lyttelton before but it is the first time a ship has been chartered by the Apple and Pear Board to export Canterbury apples. The board’s regional manager, Mr Perry Trevella, said the shipment was “a bit of a trial load." The Peruvian Reefer is expected to leave, port ; today. j
