Wizard
Sir, — I am sorry your correspondents who have commented on the Wizard are so deficient in humour. The Wizard has been a , ?al asset to Christchurch, and I am sure the City Council realizes it. He gets no remuneration from the council and I am sure he would spurn it if it was offered to him. All he is trying to do is make people laugh at themselves, but quite a lot ofpeople cannot get the message, and therefore miss a lot of the joy of living— Yours, etc., (Mrs) E. SOTHERAN. May 6, 1989.
Sir, —The Maclean family (May 5) criticise the Christchurch Mayor and councillors for giving me support as a symbol of our city. It is certainly true that I have become the major symbol of Christchurch in the eyes of many people overseas and in New Zealand. It is not true, however, that I am supported by the Mayor and councillors. It would be more accurate to say that I support Christchurch, including the Mayor and councillors, and not vice versa. I am grateful for the encouragement I have received from the Canterbury Promotion Council, which advertises my presence in the city, but I have
supported myself since I first appeared in the Square 15 years ago. The “deceptions, confusions and diminishing of the value of people,” which your correspondents accuse me of through my spell-casting, are, in my opinion, more accurately associated with puritanical religious and political groups who are obsessed with crushing colourful personalities, using their own notions of God or the people to justify themselves.—Yours, etc., lAN BRACKENBURY CHANNELL, Wizard of Christchurch. May 5, 1989.
